It takes between 6-8 years after you have finished high school or college. Normally you do a 3 year degree a 1 year masters degree and then a 3-4 year PhD. It is great being in education for so long.

As Justin said below, normally the time it takes is a total of 6-7 years. In my case I should finish my PhD in a total of 6 years.
If you want to include primary school, secondary school and college – then to get where I am now I have been studying for 20 years 🙁

Having said that I do use big needles to get blood out of subjects/students in my lab.
