All sounds are vibrations in the air. These vibrations enter our ear. Inside our ears is a structure called the cohlea and this a coil type structure that has loads of tiny hairs inside. The vibrations from the air make these small hairs move and when they move it sends an electrical signal to the brain.

The brain then works out what these electrical signals mean and changes the signals so we can understand what the sound is.
