My research aims to examine why some people get headaches and other symptoms like vomiting when there is low levels of oxygen in your blood. This can happen if you go to high altitudes for example skiing or mountain climbing or if you are ill with conditions like sleep apnoea or a lung disease. Understanding why hypoxia makes some people feel rubbish and not other will help us design better treatments. Also, just understanding more about how the human body works and copes with different environments is worthwhile.

I look at how the heart beats and what goes wrong when you get older. In the UK we will soon have more old people than we will have young people. And most of the old people (if not all of them) suffer from heart problems, usually because they are not beating properly. I want to find out why this is, what goes wrong with the heart as we get older, can it be cured?!

So I hope with my research I’ll be able to find out why old people die of heart problems and what can be done to stop it.
