No I didn’t. I didn’t do fantastically well at school either. I didn’t really enjoy learning until I was in my early twenties. I started university as a mature student. I was the first person in my old school’s history to get a PhD.
After I left school I had an engineering apprenticeship, but knew it wasn’t the career for me after a couple of years. It wasn’t until another couple of years later that I became fascinated with how the human body works.
You’ll likely find your interests will change as you age (mine did – and still do!). However, I really like that as it keeps things interesting.
Just think of Brian Cox (a much better scientist than me!). He was a keyboard player in a pop band, but now he heads up a project at CERN in Switzerland, and is a Professor at a top university.
