Practically every exercise makes you heart beat faster, excepts perhaps little finger wiggling. Basically, even while I am sitting at in my office at 23:30 my bodies need oxygen to stay alive. Not to loads but some. And the way your cells for example in your toe get oxygen is by breathing it into your lungs, then it goes into your blood and then is pushed around your body by your heart. If you start exercising you activate lots of muscle cells and they need more oxygen so your heart has to speed up to push more blood to the muscles. Probably you will see the greatest increases in heart rate in activities that use the most amount of muscle. For example your heart rate will increase more if you were running compared to say playing snooker. Probably cross-country skiing is the most demanding exercise on the heart as you pretty much use your whole body.

Any exercise that requires more oxygen will cause your heart to beat faster.

So even if you get up and walk to your next class, your muscles will need more oxygen and so your heart would beat faster. If you ran to your class then your heart would beat even faster then!

Basically the heavier you need the breath, the faster your heart will beat.
