I guess you are talking about 5 fruit a day. I will be a bit contraversial and say it is not essential to get 5 a day. This is a recommendation. Normally I guess the goverment and NHS etc give a best guess recommendation so that everyone can understand. There is no point giving the public very complicated and detailed information about spesific recommended minerals and vitamins that are to complicated to understand. So the 5 a day is a recommendation. Saying this, it is a good recommendation so try and keep to it.
I think what Justin said is slightly wrong. The 5 a day is quite misleading. Its important to get 5 fruit and vegetables in, mainly vegetables as these contain the most minerals and vitamins and least amount of sugar.
In some cases lots of fruit is actually bad for you because of how much sugar it has in it. But to be healthy you should definitely try to have a minimum of 2-3 different vegetables in a day.
