I’ve been studying for my PhD for 2 and a half years now. I have another half a year left before I finish and then I have to go find another job working as a scientist in another University. I’ve really enjoyed my PhD so far, I’ve been able to do some amazing things and I’ve learnt so much over the past 2 years.

I find that doing a PhD is very much down to me. Unlike a normal job where you have to go in at 9am and leave at 5pm, I can choose when I want to go in and when I want to do work. But I also have loads of work to do, so I might choose to start at 10am and have a bit of an extra sleep in the morning, but I will probably end up working till 8pm in evening. I really like being able to decide when I want to work.

My situation is very similar to Fiona, I have been studying for my PhD for 2 and a half years now and should also finish around October (well hopefully). Probably except for actually doing science, my favourite thing about my job is also the freedom. I also don’t have to work any set hours, I just have work to do and it needs to get done, it doesn’t matter if I work Monday to Friday or Tuesday to Sunday.
